With the summer over the time of rich, alcohol forward, stir-down cocktails quickly approaches. So, it is a great opportunity to start testing the waters for new recipes for when the days be short and dark. The Wardroom was a pleasant surprise, that ticked all the boxes for what I’m looking for in a stirred drink.
Base of the cocktail is split between blended aged rum and cognac. Rum brings notes of vanilla, oak, toffee, tropical fruit, while cognac’s dry profile further reinforces aged oak flavour and also introduces nut and tobacco notes to the mix. A touch of Maraschino liqueur expands the nutty profile with taste of almonds and a subtle addition of cherries. Tawny Port gives the cocktail its rich velvety texture along with notes of dried fruits. Finally, a dash of Angostura aromatic bitters brings the individual notes together into a satisfying cocktail with the help of subtle undertones of tropical spice.
All in all, The Wardroom is a wholesome, rich and delicious cocktail. I can already imagine myself happily sipping one on a dark cold winters evening. So, if you ever had a chance, I highly recommend trying it.
