Cocktail author: unknown, possibly printed for the first time in Jacques Straub’s 1913 book “Straub’s Manual of Mixed Drinks”.

Emerson is a classic cocktail reminiscent of Martinez, but with a sour twist. It is a deliciously complex and refreshing drink perfect for the transitional time of the year.

Base of the cocktail, just as in the Martinez is formed by the Old Tom Gin. Somewhat sweeter and a bit more floral type of gin, rather than the traditional London dry; it steers the cocktail in a bit more unique and forgotten direction. Sweet vermouth adds another layer of complexity with notes of dried fruits, nuts, citrus and a touch of tobacco. Delicate touch of Maraschino liqueur further expands on the sweet nutty flavours, but at the modest dosage it does not overtake the overall flavour profile. Last, but not least, lime juice freshens the cocktail up, by giving it a tart, fragrant kick, bringing the cocktail to life.

All in all, Emerson is a delightful cocktail with complex undertones, exactly like a classic cocktail should be. Give it a try if you ever have a chance.
