Cocktail author: Cocktail from Charles H. Baker’s The Gentleman’s Companion, recipe adapted by Anvil Bar & Refuge.
Winter is the prime time for warming boozy stir-down cocktails like Martinis, Sazeracs and Manhattans. The latter serves as an inspiration for this week’s cocktail recommendation – The Fourth Regiment. In principle, The Fourth Regiment is an equal parts Manhattan, where modern interpretations are also spiced by a combination of bitters instead of the traditional Angustura bitters approach.
Base of the cocktail remains the sharp, peppery rye whiskey dominating the overall flavour profile and setting the tone for the cocktail. It is then tamed by the addition of sweet vermouth and its herbal botanical notes, cutting through the sharpness of the base spirit. Combination of celery, Peychaud’s and orange bitters seasons the cocktail, while at the same time, increasing the flavour complexity by revealing the more subtle notes of rye and vermouth.
All in all, The Fourth Regiment is a delightful, rich cocktail, that I can see myself sipping during the holiday season with winter storms raging outside the window. If you are a Manhattan lover, this might be an interesting riff to try.
