French contribution to the cocktail world is indeed fascinating: starting with numerous Paris cocktail bars, especially during the interwar period and ending with a vast universe of liqueurs and other cocktail ingredients. Quatresse is a modern contribution to this huge legacy and it does not disappoint.

Base of the cocktail is Suze, a bitter, earthy gentian root liqueur with subtle floral undertones. In the absence of any other spirit, this liqueur lays the foundation for what’s to come. Sage gives the cocktail a fragrant herbal quality pairing very well with Suze, almost seeming like it belongs in the liqueur. Fresh lemon juice, adds brightness and vibrancy helping to rein in the bitterness of the cocktail base. A touch simple syrup balances the cocktail and lets the flavours pop just a bit more. Last, but certainly not least, a miniscule dose of peated scotch gives the cocktail a completely new smoky dimension taking the overall flavour complexity to the new heights.

Quatresse is a tasty and unique creation, perfect for cocktail enthusiasts who are looking for something new. Perhaps, it is a bit too light and summery for the winter, but it is tasty and sometimes that is all that counts.
