I truly love fizzes, bright, fresh and effervescent cocktails, that won me over after the first sip. Thunderbird, might not be the most traditional fizz, but it is incredibly delicious and sure to be a crowd-pleaser.
Base of the cocktail is dry gin. Recipe calls for Bluecoat, but in my case London Dry worked just fine. The juniper forward profile of gin is instantly recognizable in this cocktail, setting the perfect stage for what’s to come next. Addition of orange juice brightens the cocktail with sweet orange flavour, that is then brought to life by the refreshing tartness of lemon juice. Maraschino liqueur and its cherry, almond notes give the cocktail a layer of nuttiness and complexity, but the dosage is kept at a modest level, so it does not overpower the more delicate notes in the drink. Thus, an addition of simple syrup is necessary to fully restore balance and keep the flavour profile in check. Heavy cream brings a sense of decadence, taking the cocktail in a dessert drink direction. Finally, chilled soda water gives the all-important fizz-like effervescence, while at the same time lengthening the cocktail and allowing it to open up completely.
Thunderbird is a remarkably delicious cocktail with a touch of decadence. Lovely and refreshing from the first sip to the last.
