French 75 and Mojito are two well-known crowd-pleaser cocktails, but if you put these two together you get something stunning – Old Cuban.
Base of the cocktail is aged Cuban rum, bringing tasty notes of brown sugar, molasses and dried fruits. Lime juice adds some bright tartness to the mix, which together with the cooling herbal effect of mint freshens the drink up. Simple syrup balances the cocktail out, while also helping to tease out the more subtle notes of the base spirit. A few dashes of Angostura Bitters, the staple of tropical drinks, seasons the cocktail with complex tropical spice and fruit undertones. Last, but not least, dry champagne lengthens the drink, provides a touch of effervescence while at the same time increasing the complexity with crisp and dry notes of apples, pears and citrus.
All in all, Old Cuban is a remarkable drink taking the best aspects of two beloved cocktails and integrating them together with a stunning effect. Great choice for your next cocktail party.
