Margarita is a cocktail beloved by many and sometimes even getting synonymous with the word cocktail. Tommy’s Margarita was once a fresh take on this cocktail which have been further built on and improved by Tim Sweeney as Moon Unit Zappa cocktail and the newest addition to the Margarita family.

Originally, recipe called for either tequila or mezcal, I decided to split the base between the two. 2/3 blanco tequila and the last 1/3 mezcal. I previously had good experience with this ratio. Sometimes pure mezcal can be a bit too harsh and overpowering, but when combined with tequila it works as a lovely smoky spice to the vegetable notes of the tequila. A few dashes of the hot sauce will provide the fire to go with all that smoke. Addition of pineapple juice takes the cocktail in a new and fruitier direction, which is quite uncommon in a Margarita riff, yet works very well in this cocktail. Lime juice is the usual suspect in tequila cocktails, bringing some tartness and tropical freshness with agave syrup providing the counterbalance. A splash of sparkling soda water lengthens the drink and provides some fresh effervescence. Finally, add a touch of spicy tajin seasoning around the rim of the cocktail glass and your drink is ready to be enjoyed.

All in all, Moon Unit Zappa is a rather unique cocktail in the world of Margaritas, but is definitely worth a try.
