Cocktail author: classic cocktail, that first appeared at the start of the XX century.

I cannot believe, that until this day I have not reviewed The Last Word on my website. This classic cocktail recipe served as an inspiration for many modern classics. Through its simplicity and bold flavours, it surely leaves an impression. It was also one of the first recipes I have tasted, once I got swallowed up by the cocktail world.

Being an equal parts cocktail, it is difficult to state that one or the other ingredient serves as a base spirit. Most noticeable of all are Maraschino liqueur and Green Chartreuse. Nutty bitter-sweet liqueur made from Marasca cherries, blends very well with strong herbal profile of the Green Chartreuse creating a memorable combo. London Dry gin, for me, gets a little lost between these two liqueurs. It raises the overall proof of the cocktail, with juniper notes subtly lingering in the background. Fresh lime juice livens the cocktail up with its distinct tartness, balancing the sweetness of the liqueurs and making this cocktail into the classic that it is. Sunken cherry to the bottom of the glass is a must here. I love Amarena cherries, and knowing that this little treat is waiting for me at the bottom, makes this cocktail even more seductive.

All in all, Last Word has been created more than a hundred years ago and while our tastes have changed, the potency of this drink still remains. A true delight for any cocktail nerd.
