Whisky and tiki cocktails do not meet often, so much so, that most believe they are not supposed to go together, but every now and then, one can be surprised. Iron Ranger is a tiki inspired, bourbon-based cocktail, that is truly delicious.
As already mentioned, base of the cocktail is bourbon with sweet notes of caramel and vanilla all wrapped up in an aged oak. Pineapple juice takes the cocktail straight into a tiki direction with delicious balance between sweet, tart and tangy. Falernum further builds on with tropical flavours and hints of clove, allspice and candied lime. Lemon juice provides the refreshing tartness, which together with a splash of simple syrup finely balances the cocktail out. Lemon is a rather unusual choice for tiki, but it works fantastically well with the base spirit. Finally, a couple of dashes of Angostura bitters, reinforces the tropical spice, teasing out the subtleties of the flavour profile for a more complex drinking experience.
Iron Ranger is an unusual yet surprisingly tasty drink from start to finish. Absolutely give it a try if you have a chance, it will brighten those dark and rainy autumn evenings.
