For some reason, sloe gin season, in my house, tends to peak in the autumn. Those sweet, tart and fruity notes become remarkably comforting when the weather starts getting cold. Combine that with another cold weather staple like scotch and you get one hell of an evening sipper.

Main spirit in the cocktail is scotch bringing those warming malt, oak and subtle vanilla notes, creating a proper foundation for the fall drink. Sloe gin pairs incredibly well with scotch by introducing complex sweet, tart fruitiness combined with subtle gin undertones. A touch of absinthe brings bold aniseed flavour with a dash of orange bitters binding it all together. Last, but note least, lemon juice and sugar combination delicately balance the cocktail out, while at the same time giving it a freshens boost.

The Modern is a delightfully delicious cocktail full of complex flavours and subtle notes from start to finish. It is a fantastic drink to relax with in front of a wood fire on those cold and rainy evenings.
