Cocktails like Margarita and Jungle Bird need no introduction to cocktail lovers. So, when I found this recipe inspired by both of these classics I was immediately intrigued and had to taste it.

The long list of ingredients reminds me of tiki cocktails, so in order to make one you might need to expand your back bar.

Base of the cocktail would most likely be blanco tequila with those beloved vegetal agave notes. However, a more modest addition of Mezcal is just as prominent with its bold smoky profile. For gentian liqueur I used Suze: earthy, bitter and complex liqueur really lifts the cocktail up. Ancho Reyes Verde liqueur further builds on this earthy quality, but also introduces a sharp and spicy dimension. Generous dose of pineapple juice lengthens the cocktail with well-balanced sweet and tart fruitiness. Lime juice, the traditional citrus for mezcal and tequila, brightens and freshens the cocktail with a tart kick, while agave syrup establishes a delicate balance between different flavours.

Leña is a cocktail that is difficult to describe, sweet, tart, boozy and fruity, it has it all. It is a drink with complex and rich profile, sure to intrigue many cocktail enthusiasts.
