I have held back for years to try The Aviation cocktail, not for any particular reason, I simply had too many other cocktails on my list. However, finally, after all this time a perfect opportunity appeared to test this gin classic.
Base of the cocktail is London Dry gin with those classic juniper, coriander and citrus notes we all know and love. Maraschino liqueur brings complex nutty, fruity cherry flavour to the mix, while crème de violette adds fragrant, floral, intensely aromatic, almost perfume-like quality. Addition of fresh lemon juice balances the cocktail out with refreshingly zesty citrus tartness binding it all together.
Aviation is a simple classic gin cocktail, perfectly suited for home-bartenders. Although, I got to say, that while it was a good cocktail, it wasn’t anything special. If I had to order a cocktail at a bar, I would probably go for something like Last Word instead.
