Amari and cocktails are two inseparable summer staples. Starting with light and refreshing spritzes and ending with bold and flavourful Negroni style drinks. This time I had a pleasure of tasting Appetizer à L’Italienne – a complex and flavour laden cocktail.
Base of the cocktail is sweet vermouth with delicious notes of orange, tobacco and cola. It lays a solid yet lower ABV foundation perfect for summer cocktails. Choice of amaro comes in a bold form of Fernet-Branca. In my experience, it might be a bit of a divisive spirit, so if you are not a fan of it, this might not be the cocktail for you. Powerful herbal, minty notes of the amaro are strongly present in this drink, pairing well with sweet vermouth, but also starting to take a spotlight away from it. So much so, that it starts dominating the overall flavour profile. Subtle addition of absinthe adds a bit more complexity with further herbal notes of anise. Touch of demerara syrup sweetens the cocktail with those deep molasses rich notes combining very well with the vermouth and Fernet for a more pleasurable drinking experience.
All in all, Appetizer à L’Italienne is a strong and flavourful cocktail, ready to leave a strong and lasting impression on your palate.
